It is one of Poland’s leading opera ensembles, and its history is inseparable from that of the city’s musical life. Although formally associated with the Grand Theatre since the inauguration of its new building in 1967, its roots date back to 1954, when the Łódź Opera was founded. It was then that the instrumental ensemble began to take shape, eventually evolving into today’s orchestra.

Over the years, the orchestra has performed the core repertoire of the operatic and symphonic canon. Contemporary music also occupies an important place in its repertoire, and the ensemble has repeatedly participated in Polish and world premieres of new works by composers such as Romuald Twardowski and Krzysztof Penderecki.

The orchestra’s artistic development has been profoundly shaped by distinguished conductors associated with the Łódź opera stage, including Władysław Raczkowski, Zygmunt Latoszewski, Bohdan Wodiczko, Bogusław Madey, Antoni Wicherek, Tadeusz Wojciechowski, Wojciech Michniewski, Ewa Michnik, Antoni Wit, and Tadeusz Kozłowski. Thanks to their leadership, the ensemble has developed a high artistic standard, a distinctive artistic identity, and a recognisable sound.
