Experiences: Mendelssohn / Mahler

November 17 @ 19:00 - 21:45

Instrumental works can be viewed either as sound and form, or as conveying extra-musical content. For Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, despite his fascination with nature and travel, music always remained the domain of sensual sound and formal perfection, and his Violin Concerto in E minor is an evocative example of this. Mahler’ s Symphony No. 1 , on the other hand, is a programmatic work in which the composer depicted through sound the story of a young hero facing adversity.
